This
past weekend in Victoria, BC, was the fourth race in the Frontrunners GutBuster
Trail Running Series and it featured two spectacular courses that were truly
worthy of the GutBuster name. Both routes, designed by Bob Reid from the PIH,
were filled with great trails leading to one incredible view from the top of Mount
Douglas. Two
members of last year's Canadian Mountain Running Team, Jason Loutitt and Phil
Villeneuve from Canmore, AB, flew in to compete for their spot on this year's
team that is headed to New Zealand for the World Championships. Loutitt
didn't disappoint and raced to an easy victory with a time of 53:01. Villeneuve
was second at 55:33 and Frontrunners owner, Stefan Jakobsen, finished third just
26 seconds back. Graham Cocksedge, the winner of the past five GutBusters, did
not race due to injury. Local
Victoria racer, Claire Townsend, was the fastest female of the day and claimed
her third GutBuster title of the season. Looking very stylish in her running skirt,
Townsend a member of the 2003 Canadian Mountain Running Team finished the 12km
course in 1:07:32 seconds. Carol Tickner of Victoria (pictured above) was the
second female across the line followed by Bobbie Jensen of Nanaimo. In
the Masters 12km category, Kevin Searle was first across the line with a time
of 1:04:30 taking the title held by Myron Knippshield for the past three GutBusters
this year. Sandy Stewart finished third. Tickner was the fastest female Master
of the day followed by Wendy Davies and Louise Proulx. Robbie
Leather of Victoria was the fastest man on the 5km Short Course. Leather finished
with a record breaking 19:04. Laura Wyatt was the fastest female (overall and
masters) on the short course finishing in 23:00. Kristen Yarker of Vancouver was
the top Open female finishing in 24:07 and Garth Campbell finished in 21:58 to
take home the Masters male category. ***

awards finished with a fun race for a pair of Adidas Trail Response runners. Ten
racers selected randomly were called up to compete in the challenge. Racers had
to hop to the end of the field with a balloon between their legs, then they had
to pop the balloon and pick up a spoon and egg and balance it back to the start
line. Robbie Leather and the guy in the blue shorts and jacket were the champs
and took home the shoes! Fun stuff!
Thanks to everyone for coming out and busting-a-gut!!!
